Beam, Longest and Neff, LLC (BLN) has been chosen by the Indiana Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association for the Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award in addition to the National Excellence of Concrete Pavement Award for the work completed on I-69, Section 4.
The project was developed using alternate pavement sections providing the opportunity for bidding of either an asphalt or concrete pavement treatment. An additional 0.77 miles of an adjacent project were included when this project was let in 2012 and had a low bid of $57.0 million. During the section 4 project, BLN provided roadway and bridge design for 2.2 miles of new-terrain rural interstate highway from Plummer Creek to south of SR 45. Section 4, with its forests and rolling topography, presented many more complex challenges for terrain, geology, environmental and public sensitivity, access, and cost. Design elements included horizontal and vertical alignments, superelevation, drainage, karst feature mitigation, construction sequencing, pavement markings, quantity calculations, specifications and construction cost estimates.
Jim Longest, President of BLN, emphasizes that the firm’s top priority is to “produce high quality work through skillful execution and diligent review. Without the hard work and experienced members of the BLN team, it would not be possible to continually put forth work worthy of awards such as the ACPA. Every team member who worked on this project, as well as many others, deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication to the firm; without our engineers and staff, we would not be able to remain in the forefront of infrastructure engineering for over 70 years.”
Additionally, BLN’s Right-of-Way Services and Survey teams also provided expert services that were completed ahead of schedule so that design of this fast-tracked transportation improvement project could begin without delay.
The ACPA Awards are designed to honor quality concrete pavements constructed in the United States and Canada each year. The awards program encourages high-quality workmanship in every concrete pavement project and serves as a forum for sharing information about highly successful projects. As a whole, the awards are given to the people and projects that honor the commitment, focus, innovation, and determination of professionals in the transportation community. BLN has had the good fortune and innovative individuals that have produced multiple ACPA Awards, such as the National Award for Excellence in 1993 and 2013, two awards for Excellence in Concrete Pavement in 2002, and one in 2006.
