College Mall Road | Roadway Reconstruction

BLOOMINGTON, IN—This project involved the widening and reconstruction of approximately 0.75 miles of College Mall Road, including multiple intersection improvements. This project also included the construction of 990 feet of a three-sided, precast, concrete culvert for the underground conveyance of Jackson Run Creek and the reconstruction of two bridges (Monroe County Bridges No. 602 and 623).

Innovative Ideas Used

For this project, video detection devices were installed in lieu of pavement loops. The traffic signals were interconnected with fiber optic cable to allow future monitoring of traffic conditions by the City of Bloomington's Engineering Services Department. This provided an innovative solution for the detection needed at two bridge structures at the intersection. Interconnection allows for signal synchronization to improve traffic flow through the corridor and for real time remote monitoring of current traffic operations.

Additional Features

  • Concrete sidewalks and a multi-use path
  • Relocation of a water main and sanitary sewer
  • 3 signalized intersections
  • Center medians
  • Landscaped trees and tulip bulbs

ACEC Merit Award winner.

During construction of this project, the City of Bloomington installed two web cameras on buildings overlooking the site. These cameras broadcast real time and archived construction progress. This allowed the public, engineers, contractors and city officials to monitor the current construction and traffic conditions.
